Final Exam

Please study the pages I showed in class for the final exam. Here are the notes:

Today, we should do lots of review. Next week is the final exam. I don’t think anyone is failing, except (but) those who did not attend class.

1. Some verbs take the gerund.

We delayed taking the test until January 1. 

We avoid talking to people with bad manners. 

2. Some verbs take the infinitive. Why? There is no why.

How to make the English test easier:

Frank abhors ________ French because he feels it is difficult.

a. to studying (cross it out immediately because the grammar is weird)

b. studies (this breaks the gerund / infinitive rule so cross it out)

c. studying 

d. will study (future, so cross it out; we didn’t study this in our textbook so it will NOT be on the test)

Process of elimination. Cross out the wrong answers before you even start. 

If you really don’t know the answer, find

the one that is different. 

a. gorgeous

b. stupid

c. extroverted

d. quickly

Find the one that is longer or shorter

a. She likes Christmas.

b. She eats ice cream.

c. Sally has a red bicycle.

d. Going into the old park.  

They are all the same length. 

It is a sentence fragment. 

Test psychology. 


Vocabulary. 

A: I say the fragment.

B: You repeat the fragment and complete the sentence. 

Successful

Low standard. You are setting the bar low. 

When I feel embarrassed, I speak softly. 

Insist on… + gerund

Go out is not wrong, but it isn’t fluent either.

Greet: how to meet someone

I should greet someone from Japan by bowing. GERUND

Customs are different from habits. Customs are the things a group of people (society) normally does while habits are for individuals.

Individual: a single / one person 





Screenplay is the story for a movie. 

Twist of fate: surprise ending to a story

A good screenplay should have a good plot. 

Scared: terrified

Greet: how to meet someone 

Make excuses / apologize: say sorry

Synonym is two words with the same meaning. 

Structure: building

Page 59:

Outer beauty: appearance

Inner beauty: personality, creativity, etc. 

Genre: kind of movie

We need to practice grammar, like I said. Also, I want to start reviewing vocabulary. 

So, don’t say “Hey, we did this before!”

We are reviewing, so you can remember the words for the final exam. 

1. Some is yes or positive/affirmative. I have it.

2. Any is no or negative. I do NOT have it. 

3. Some/Any are both okay for a question. 

Aisle: s is silent

In two weeks, we have the final exam. These words are on that test. Please try to remember. December 27



Recommend: suggest, advise, you should, etc. 

How come? = Why? 

1. Tell your partner to look in the textbook. 

2. Tell your partner the page number.

3. Your partner will look in his/her textbook at the page.

4. Your partner will tell you the answer.

5. You will write down the answer. 

6. You will speak English at all times.

7. Use your imagination. “I don’t know” is unacceptable in a university.

These are homonyms. Same sound or pronunciation, different meaning/spelling.

Recipe is the list to tell you how to cook a dish or food.  

Transparent: like glass; no color; you can look inside

It is the opposite of opaque. 

Today is completely going to be review because we have the final exam in two weeks. I want you to get a good score. 

I don't speak sign language. Please, do NOT use your hands to speak to me.
